The FreeSip lid opens to a built-in straw plus a wider swig opening. Image: Owala.

The FreeSip is a bottle with a push-button flip lid. Owala's product page lists a "Leak-proof lid" and a "carry loop that also doubles as a lock when closed" (Owala). The Quencher is a handled tumbler. Stanley describes its lid as "a rotating cover with three positions: a straw opening, a wide mouth for drinking, and a full-cover top to resist splashes" (Stanley). Stanley's product page doesn't call that lid leakproof. For what reviewers report, see our Stanley lid guide.

Which one holds more water?

The Stanley in this comparison is 40 oz and the FreeSip is 24 oz, so the Stanley holds 16 oz more per fill. The FreeSip also comes in 32 oz and 40 oz (Owala), and the Quencher in 14, 20, 30 and 64 oz (Stanley). Not sure which size you need? Try the refill calculator.

What does each brand say about car cup holders?

Stanley lists a 3.1 in base diameter and says sizes up to 40 oz "will comfortably fit most car and truck cupholders" (Stanley). Owala's FreeSip product page and FAQ don't make a cup-holder claim. They list the 24 oz at 3.12 in diameter (Owala FAQ). The FreeSip's Amazon listing describes a "cup holder-friendly base" in one bullet and, in the next, says the bottle "is wider than standard cupholders and may only fit in oversized or specialty cupholders" (Amazon listing). Measure your cup holder before you buy. There's more in does the Owala FreeSip fit in a cup holder?

How long does each keep drinks cold?

Owala's FreeSip page says "24 hours cold" (Owala). Stanley's 40 oz product page shows "11 Hrs" and "2 Days" (Stanley). Stanley's page for a limited-edition version of the same 40 oz Quencher H2.0 FlowState labels these as "11 HRS COLD" and "2 DAYS ICED," and adds "7 HRS HOT" (Stanley). These are each maker's own ratings. Neither page explains the test conditions, so we don't rank them against each other, and we haven't tested them ourselves.

Can you put hot coffee in either one?

Owala says not in the FreeSip. Its FAQ says the stainless FreeSip is "Not for use with hot, carbonated, or perishable liquids" (Owala FAQ). Stanley lists the Quencher 40 oz at 7 hours hot (Stanley). Owala's FreeSip page points people who want hot drinks to its tumbler products (Owala), and its FAQ says the SmoothSip "Holds cold, carbonated, and hot drinks" (Owala FAQ). See SmoothSip vs FreeSip.

How do you clean each one?

Stanley lists the Quencher as "Dishwasher safe" (Stanley). Owala's FAQ says FreeSip lids are top-rack dishwasher safe and straws can go in the silverware bin. It says stainless cups are "technically dishwasher safe," but Owala "strongly recommend[s]" hand-washing them to preserve the finish (Owala FAQ). Details are in is the Owala FreeSip dishwasher safe?
